Business meeting minutes, Limerick, Ireland, 13 July, 2006
Michael Myers (NZ), Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:30 PM.
Michael thanked the organizers of the IFIP 8.2 Conference, Julie Kendall (US), Debra Howcroft (UK), Eileen Trauth (US), Tom Butler (IE) and Brian Fitzgerald (IE) for a very successful Conference.
1. Past Meetings
Michael reviewed past meetings of the Working Group from 2003-2006, highlighting the variety of topics.
He requested the audience to consider proposing a conference on research methods for 2010 in keeping with the 8.2 tradition of a conference on that theme every 5 or 6 years.
Michael thanked Kevin Crowston (US) for his work as Web Master.
2. Future Meetings
Michael spoke on behalf of Matt Germonprez (US) about an OASIS Workshop planned for Milwaukee on Sunday 10 December 2006 from 9:00am to 3:30pm. The submission date for a 500-word abstract is Oct 15 to oasis2006@ifipwg82.org.
Kevin Crowston (US) provided information on the Summer 2007 Working Conference to be held in Portland, Oregon, USA on 29-31 July. The conference theme is Virtuality and Virtualization in Organizations, with an anticipated submission date of 1 Nov 2006 and notification of 1 February 2007. The General Chair will be Wanda Orlikowski (US). The Program Chairs will be Kevin Crowston (US) and Sandra Sieber (ES) and the Organizing Chair is Eleanor Wynn (US). A keynote speaker Michael Cohen (US) was announced.
Kevin proposed a co-sponsorship with the proposed IFIP WG 9.5 (which expects to be approved in September). This was seconded by Richard Baskerville (US). This was carried unanimously.
Kevin also mentioned a possible journal special issue which would take selected conference submissions. These selected papers would appear in the journal first as “best papers from the IFIP 8.2 conference” and would only appear as an abstract in the Conference Proceedings. This was seconded by Ken Kendall (US).
Ken Kendall (US) suggested that this “two-tier system” would lower the value of the Proceedings and go against the spirit of the current conference. Several additional speakers made similar points.
This motion was put to the floor but defeated.
3. Proposals for New Conferences/Workshops
Michael Myers requested members to consider making a proposal for a December 2008 OASIS workshop in Paris (in conjunction with ICIS).
